Description
Seismic Drift + P-Delta Check β method, governing standards and output schedule
The Seismic Drift + P-Delta Check determines the seismic design forces on a structure and checks the resulting storey drifts and member demands, reporting the governing lateral load case and the drift utilisation at each level. It is applied during detailed design, during design verification by a second engineer, and again during in-service assessment when the operating basis changes. Because every intermediate quantity is reported rather than only the final answer, the calculation can be checked line by line against the governing standard without re-deriving it.
This 3D-LABS workbook is built to IS 1893. You supply 10 inputs and the sheet reports 6 results, with every formula left visible so each figure can be traced to the clause it comes from.
Method of calculation
The design base shear is computed from the seismic hazard parameters, the site response spectrum, the importance factor and the response reduction factor appropriate to the structural system, and is distributed over the height by the code’s vertical distribution. Where a response spectrum analysis is used, modal responses are combined and scaled to the static base shear. Storey drift is then checked, and second-order P-delta effects are included where the stability coefficient exceeds the code threshold.
Governing standards and references
- IS 1893 β IS 1893 Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures
- ASCE 7 β ASCE/SEI 7 seismic design provisions
Each formula cites the clause it comes from on the same row as the result it produces, so a reviewer can check the sheet line by line against the standard.
Acceptance criteria
For the calculation to be reported as acceptable, storey drift must remain within the code permissible ratio, base shear from any dynamic analysis must be scaled to the code minimum, and P-delta effects must be included where the stability coefficient exceeds the threshold.
Who uses this calculation
This calculation is used by structural engineers in seismic regions, peer reviewers checking lateral systems, and retrofit designers assessing existing buildings.

What Seismic Drift + P-Delta Check β Excel Spreadsheet calculates
Seismic Drift + P-Delta Check β Excel Spreadsheet is an Excel-native engineering calculation tool built by 3D-LABS for structural, civil, and construction engineers designing buildings, foundations, pipe racks, silos, and infrastructure. It is used for sizing structural members, checking connections, designing foundations, and verifying seismic and wind load response. Every input is labelled and every output is traceable β the sheet is designed to be checkable, not a black box.
Codes and standards followed
Seismic Drift + P-Delta Check β Excel Spreadsheet follows industry-standard Structural & Civil Engineering codes including IS 456, IS 800, IS 875, IS 1893, AISC 360, ACI 318, EN 1992, EN 1993, ASCE 7. Each formula is cross-referenced to the applicable code clause so your reviewer can trace calculations back to the standard.
If your project requires a different code base (e.g. converting an IS-code sheet to an ASME basis), we can produce a code-variant edition on request. Contact info@3d-labs.com for a variant quote.
