Description
This Zero Liquid Discharge eBook from 3D-LABS is written for engineers and students who want a clear, practical reference they can apply immediately.
Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Design is a practitioner-level engineering book covering zero liquid discharge system design for the industries where CPCB has made it mandatory โ pre-treatment, membrane concentration, thermal evaporation, crystallisation and salt recovery. It is written for the engineer who has to make a ZLD train work on real effluent, at a power cost the plant can survive.
What format does this book follow and what standards does it reference?
Each stage is presented as design basis, sizing calculation and worked example on a 500 mยณ/day textile effluent and a smaller distillery stream. References include CPCB directions on zero liquid discharge for the highly polluting industry categories, the Water Act 1974 consent framework, CPCB OCEMS connectivity requirements, and ASME Section VIII Division 1 for evaporator and crystalliser pressure parts.
How is the membrane train designed and protected?
The RO train is designed from the feed water analysis: scaling indices, silica and hardness limits, antiscalant selection, and the recovery at which each sparingly soluble salt reaches saturation. Ultrafiltration pre-treatment, cartridge filtration, and the high-recovery stages โ disc-tube and high-pressure RO โ are sized with flux, pressure and cleaning frequency stated. Membrane fouling and the CIP regime are treated as operating realities, not footnotes.
What drives the choice between MEE and MVR?
Multiple-effect evaporation and mechanical vapour recompression are compared on steam or electrical energy per tonne of water evaporated, capital cost, turndown, fouling tolerance and maintenance. The book gives the effect-count optimisation for MEE, the compressor duty calculation for MVR, and the boiling-point-elevation and scaling behaviour that decides tube material and cleaning interval for both.
Does the book cover salt recovery and disposal?
Yes. Crystalliser selection, ATFD operation, and the separation of sodium chloride from sodium sulphate are covered, including the nanofiltration split that makes saleable salt possible. Where recovery is not viable, the book covers classification of the residue, lined-landfill disposal requirements and the record-keeping that goes with it. The economics of salt sale against disposal cost are worked through.
