Description
🎓 Lifting & Rigging Engineer Training — live online training from 3D-LABS, taught by practising design engineers who build the calculators and software used on EPC projects every day.
⏱ Duration: 4 weeks · 🕑 Schedule: 2 hrs/day, weekday or weekend batches · 📶 Level: Intermediate · 💻 Mode: Live online, every session recorded
👷 Who this course is for
Mechanical, structural and construction engineers who plan heavy lifts, and QA/QC or site engineers who have to review and approve a rigging study before it goes to the field.
📚 Course structure
- Lift engineering fundamentals — Load definition, dynamic amplification factors, consequence classes, and the difference between a routine, engineered and critical lift.
- Padeye and lifting lug design — Hole and cheek plate sizing, bearing and tear-out checks, weld design, and the Bechtel lug method worked end to end.
- Slings, shackles and rigging hardware — Sling angle effects, D/d ratio, working load limits and design factors, wire rope and synthetic sling selection, hardware certification.
- Spreader and lifting beam design — Beam sizing, lateral torsional buckling, trunnion checks, and when a spreader beats a straight sling arrangement.
- Crane selection and ground bearing — Load charts, radius and boom configuration, outrigger pressures, crane mats and allowable ground bearing pressure.
- Multi-crane and tandem lifts — Load sharing between cranes, synchronisation, tailing cranes, and what a tandem lift study must demonstrate.
- SPMT transport and strand jacking — Axle load distribution, route and grade checks, stability during transport, strand jack and skidding systems.
- Lift plan documentation — Rigging study drawings, calculation packs and method statements, and how a lift plan is reviewed and approved.
🧮 3D-LABS calculators and software you will use
Every module is taught against real design sheets from our library of 680+ engineering calculators and our in-house software (STR Master, FEA Master) — you keep access to them and can use them on the job from day one.
- Padeye and lifting lug design with cheek plates (Bechtel method)
- Spreader beam and lifting beam sizing
- Sling tension and sling angle load factors
- Crane outrigger load and ground bearing pressure
- Tandem and multi-crane load sharing
- SPMT axle load and route grade check
- Strand jack and skidding force calculation
- Tailing lug and upending analysis
🖥 Tools, codes and standards covered
ASME BTH-1, AISC 360, API RP 2A for offshore lifts, DNV-ST-N001 lifting appliance practice, LOLER and IS 3938 hardware requirements.
📦 What is included
- Certificate of completion issued by 3D-LABS
- Lifetime access to course notes and session recordings
- Working calculators and templates used in class
- A guided mini-project with reviewed deliverables
