Description
API 579 Part 5: Pitting Corrosion Assessment β method, governing standards and output schedule
The API 579 Part 5: Pitting Corrosion Assessment assesses whether a component containing measured metal loss, pitting or a crack-like flaw can remain in service at its current operating conditions, and determines the reduced maximum allowable working pressure where the flaw is not acceptable at full rating. It is applied during detailed design, during design verification by a second engineer, and again during in-service assessment when the operating basis changes. Because every intermediate quantity is reported rather than only the final answer, the calculation can be checked line by line against the governing standard without re-deriving it.
This 3D-LABS workbook is built to API 579-1/ASME FFS-1. You supply 11 inputs and the sheet reports 5 results, with every formula left visible so each figure can be traced to the clause it comes from.
Method of calculation
For local metal loss and pitting the remaining strength factor RSF is computed from the flaw geometry and compared with the allowable RSF, with the reduced MAWP following as MAWPΒ·RSF/RSFa where the flaw fails the Level 1 screening. For crack-like flaws the Failure Assessment Diagram approach is used: the stress intensity ratio Kr and the load ratio Lr are plotted against the FAD curve to establish the margin against both brittle fracture and plastic collapse.
Governing standards and references
- API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 β API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 Fitness-For-Service
Each formula cites the clause it comes from on the same row as the result it produces, so a reviewer can check the sheet line by line against the standard.
Acceptance criteria
For the calculation to be reported as acceptable, the calculated RSF must equal or exceed the allowable RSF at the operating pressure, or the pressure must be reduced accordingly; for crack-like flaws the assessment point must lie inside the FAD envelope with the required margin.
Who uses this calculation
This calculation is used by plant integrity and materials engineers, inspection contractors reporting anomalies, and engineering authorities approving continued operation.

What API 579 Part 5: Pitting Corrosion Assessment β Excel Spreadsheet calculates
API 579 Part 5: Pitting Corrosion Assessment β Excel Spreadsheet is an Excel-native engineering calculation tool built by 3D-LABS for aerospace, defence, and propulsion engineers working with airframe structures, aerodynamic surfaces, and space systems. It is used for sizing structural components, calculating aerodynamic loads, verifying material margins, and modelling propulsion parameters. Every input is labelled and every output is traceable β the sheet is designed to be checkable, not a black box.
Codes and standards followed
API 579 Part 5: Pitting Corrosion Assessment β Excel Spreadsheet follows API 579. Each formula in the spreadsheet is cross-referenced to the specific code clause it implements β you can trace any calculation back to the underlying standard, which is essential for design review and regulatory sign-off.
If your project requires a different code base (e.g. converting an IS-code sheet to an ASME basis), we can produce a code-variant edition on request. Contact info@3d-labs.com for a variant quote.
What is included in your download
- The Excel calculation file (.xlsx) β fully unlocked formulas, cell-level comments, and a clear input/output layout.
- A sample worked example β realistic inputs plus expected outputs so you can validate the spreadsheet against a known case.
- User notes (PDF) β assumptions, code clauses referenced, and edge-case guidance.
- Revision history β every update to the spreadsheet is logged so you know what changed and when.
- Email support β reply within 24 hours (Monday to Saturday, IST) for questions about the spreadsheet or its use.
