This Specification covers the design of bolted joints and the installation and
inspection of the assemblies of fastener components the use
of alternative-design fasteners as permitted and alternative
washer-type indicating devices as permitted This Specification relates only to those aspects of the connected
materials that bear upon the performance of the fastener components. The
Symbols, Glossary and Appendices are a part of this Specification.
*Design for Strength Using Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD)
*Design for Strength Using Allowable Strength Design (ASD)
Designed as flexible connections
Connections are assumed to be free to rotate
Vertical shear forces are the primary forces transferred by the connection
Require a separate bracing system for lateral stability
*A plate is welded to the supporting member and bolted to the web of the supported beam
The in-plane pair of legs are attached to the web of the supported beam and the out-of-plane pair of legs to the flange or web of the supporting member

The new ASTM specification F1852 refers to the fasteners frequently referred to as tension control, TC, twist-off, or torque-and-snap fasteners. High-Strength bolts range in diameter from ½ to 1½ in. For bolts larger than 1½ in the AISC allows the use of ASTM A449 provided that they are not used in slip-critical connections. b) Unfinished Bolts
