- Drawing hierarchy — BFD, PFD and P&ID — what each one is for and what information belongs on which.
- Symbols and legends — Equipment, valve, instrument and line symbols, legend sheets and project-specific conventions.
- Line numbering and tagging — Line number structure, equipment tags, instrument tags and ISA identification letters.
- Instrumentation and control on P&IDs — Loops, control schemes, interlocks, trip logic and safety instrumented functions as drawn.
- Utilities and auxiliary systems — Steam, cooling water, instrument air, nitrogen and drain systems.
- Developing a P&ID — Marking up from a PFD, adding instrumentation and valves, and building a complete sheet.
- Reviews and markups — HAZOP and design review conventions, revision clouds, holds and as-built markup practice.
- Practice set — Reading and then developing P&IDs for a real unit.
