Description

This Heat Exchanger Design Basics eBook from 3D-LABS references ASME standards and explains each method with clear worked examples for practising engineers and students.

Heat Exchanger Design Basics covers fundamental thermal and hydraulic design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers to TEMA Class R/C/B and ASME VIII Div 1 — heat duty calculation, LMTD method, overall heat transfer coefficient, tube-side and shell-side heat transfer and pressure drop, fouling factors, and TEMA mechanical design requirements. Written for process and mechanical engineers entering heat exchanger design.

What are the fundamental heat exchanger design steps?

TEMA design procedure: (1) Process duty Q = m-dot x Cp x delta-T (kW), (2) Calculate LMTD and correction factor F from TEMA charts, (3) Assume initial U (W/m2-K) — water-to-water 850-1700, hydrocarbon-to-steam 280-850 per TEMA Table B-4, (4) Trial area A = Q / (U x F x LMTD), (5) Select tube size, layout, passes, and shell size, (6) Calculate actual U from hi and ho (Dittus-Boelter), (7) Verify U_design = U_clean / (1 + U_clean x (Rf_i + Rf_o)) is adequate.

What tube-side Nusselt number formula is used?

For turbulent flow (Re greater than 10,000): Dittus-Boelter Nu = 0.023 x Re^0.8 x Pr^0.4 (heating) or x Pr^0.3 (cooling). Tube-side coefficient hi = Nu x k / Di. TEMA recommends tube-side velocity 0.9 to 2.4 m/s for liquid service (TEMA Cl. RCB-2.31) and Re must exceed 10,000 for Dittus-Boelter applicability. For laminar (Re less than 2300): Sieder-Tate correlation with viscosity correction.

What TEMA mechanical design requirements are covered?

TEMA Class R (severe service), C (commercial and general process), B (chemical process): shell minimum thickness (6 mm for ID up to 100 mm to 11 mm for ID 600-900 mm), minimum nozzle size (3/4 inch Class C, 1 inch Class R), and tie rod requirements per TEMA Section 8. Bundle clearance per TEMA Cl. RCB-6.1 (1/2 to 3/4 inch for floating head types). Expansion joint required when thermal growth exceeds allowed differential shell-to-tube expansion.
