Description
ASME VIII Div 3 KD-4: Fracture Mechanics Crack Growth — Excel — method, governing standards and output schedule
The KD-4 calculation is the fracture mechanics route to design life: it assumes a flaw is already present, grows it under the pressure cycle by the Paris law until it reaches the critical size, and divides the resulting life by a design margin. Division 3 requires this route where the KD-3 S-N route is not sufficient on its own, and it is the article that decides whether a high pressure component fails leak-before-break or fails by unstable fracture. The sheet integrates the Paris law in closed form, computes the critical depth from both the fracture toughness and the leak-before-burst limit, and reports which of the two governs.
This 3D-LABS workbook is built in the ASME BPVC VIII Division 3 Article KD-4 clause sequence. You supply 17 engineering inputs and the sheet reports 12 results, with every formula left visible so each figure can be traced to the clause it comes from.
Method of calculation
The cyclic hoop stress range at the flaw is formed from the Lamé solution over the pressure cycle. The Newman & Raju shape factor Q is computed from the assumed flaw aspect ratio, combined with the geometry multiplier to give the stress intensity factor solution, and the initial ΔK follows. The critical crack depth is found twice — once from the fracture toughness KIc and once from the leak-before-burst depth limit — and the smaller of the two governs. The Paris law is then integrated in closed form from the initial depth to the governing critical depth to give the calculated cycles, the design margin is applied, and the crack depth reached at the end of the required life is reported so the remaining ligament can be judged.
Governing standards and references
- ASME VIII Div 3 KD-400 — fracture mechanics evaluation, scope (2023)
- ASME VIII Div 3 KD-401 — assumed initial flaw size and orientation (2023)
- ASME VIII Div 3 KD-430 — fatigue crack growth rate data and the number of design cycles (2023)
- ASME VIII Div 3 Appendix D — stress intensity factor solutions for assumed flaw geometries (2023)
- Newman & Raju (1981) — stress intensity factors for semi-elliptical surface cracks, NASA TM
Each formula cites the clause it comes from on the same row as the result it produces, so a reviewer can check the sheet line by line against the standard.
Acceptance criteria
The component is reported as acceptable when the design cycles — the calculated crack growth life divided by the KD-430 design margin — exceed the required design cycles, and the crack depth reached at the end of that life remains below the governing critical depth.
Who uses this calculation
Fracture mechanics and integrity engineers assessing high pressure components; Division 3 designers establishing design life where KD-140 directs the evaluation to the KD-4 route; and reviewers checking the assumed flaw, the K solution and the Paris integration independently.
Important note on scope
This is a 3D-LABS worked example built in the ASME clause sequence. It is not a reproduction of an official ASME example — ASME publishes PTB-3 for Division 2 only, and there is no Division 3 example manual. Formulas, factors and acceptance limits must be verified against the governing edition of the Code before design use. S-N and crack-growth data are entered by the user from the Code figures and tables.

What ASME VIII Div 3 KD-4: Fracture Mechanics Crack Growth — Excel calculates
ASME VIII Div 3 KD-4: Fracture Mechanics Crack Growth — Excel is an Excel-native engineering calculation tool built by 3D-LABS for mechanical, design, and equipment engineers working with pressure equipment, rotating machinery, and mechanical systems. It is used for sizing pressure vessels, heat exchangers, flanges, bolts, and other mechanical components. Every input is labelled and every output is traceable — the sheet is designed to be checkable, not a black box.
Codes and standards followed
ASME VIII Div 3 KD-4: Fracture Mechanics Crack Growth — Excel follows ASME VIII. Each formula in the spreadsheet is cross-referenced to the specific code clause it implements — you can trace any calculation back to the underlying standard, which is essential for design review and regulatory sign-off.
If your project requires a different code base (e.g. converting an IS-code sheet to an ASME basis), we can produce a code-variant edition on request. Contact info@3d-labs.com for a variant quote.
What is included in your download
- The Excel calculation file (.xlsx) — fully unlocked formulas, cell-level comments, and a clear input/output layout.
- A sample worked example — realistic inputs plus expected outputs so you can validate the spreadsheet against a known case.
- User notes (PDF) — assumptions, code clauses referenced, and edge-case guidance.
- Revision history — every update to the spreadsheet is logged so you know what changed and when.
