Description
ASME VIII Div 3 KD-3: Fatigue Evaluation (S-N Route) — Excel — method, governing standards and output schedule
The KD-3 calculation takes a pressure-cycled high pressure component from its stress tensor at each extreme of the cycle through to the number of design cycles the KD-320 fatigue curve will allow. The central point of the article — and the single most common error in Division 3 fatigue work — is that KD-312 requires the von Mises equivalent stress computed on the difference of the two stress tensors, not the difference of two equivalent stresses. The two are only equal under proportional loading. This sheet computes both and reports the gap between them on its own row, so the error is visible instead of silent.
This 3D-LABS workbook is built in the ASME BPVC VIII Division 3 Article KD-3 clause sequence. You supply 18 engineering inputs and the sheet reports 11 results, with every formula left visible so each figure can be traced to the clause it comes from.
Method of calculation
Lamé coefficients are formed from the bore and outside radii, then the hoop, radial and axial stresses are evaluated at both Pmax and Pmin. The stress difference tensor is built component by component per KD-312 and reduced to a single von Mises equivalent range; the incorrect route (von Mises at each extreme, then subtracted) is computed alongside it purely for comparison. Half the equivalent range gives the elastic alternating amplitude, which is then multiplied by Kf, Ke, the surface factor and the modulus ratio to give the effective amplitude to enter the curve with. A log-log slope is fitted through the two user-supplied S-N points, the allowable cycles are interpolated from it, and the usage factor and margin on cycles follow.
Governing standards and references
- ASME VIII Div 3 KD-300 — fatigue evaluation, scope and applicability (2023)
- ASME VIII Div 3 KD-312 — equivalent stress range and alternating stress amplitude (2023)
- ASME VIII Div 3 KD-320 — design fatigue curves (2023)
- ASME VIII Div 3 KD-140 — relationship between the KD-3 and KD-4 evaluation routes (2023)
- ASME VIII Div 2 Part 5 — comparable elastic fatigue and Ke methodology, cross-reference only (2023)
Each formula cites the clause it comes from on the same row as the result it produces, so a reviewer can check the sheet line by line against the standard.
Acceptance criteria
The component is reported as acceptable when the usage factor stays below unity — that is, when the allowable cycles read from the KD-320 curve at the effective alternating amplitude exceed the required design cycles with the applicable margin.
Who uses this calculation
Pressure vessel and high pressure equipment designers evaluating pressure-cycled service; fatigue specialists preparing a Division 3 life assessment; and verification engineers checking whether the KD-3 or the KD-4 route governs under KD-140.
Important note on scope
This is a 3D-LABS worked example built in the ASME clause sequence. It is not a reproduction of an official ASME example — ASME publishes PTB-3 for Division 2 only, and there is no Division 3 example manual. Formulas, factors and acceptance limits must be verified against the governing edition of the Code before design use. S-N and crack-growth data are entered by the user from the Code figures and tables.

What ASME VIII Div 3 KD-3: Fatigue Evaluation (S-N Route) — Excel calculates
ASME VIII Div 3 KD-3: Fatigue Evaluation (S-N Route) — Excel is an Excel-native engineering calculation tool built by 3D-LABS for mechanical, design, and equipment engineers working with pressure equipment, rotating machinery, and mechanical systems. It is used for sizing pressure vessels, heat exchangers, flanges, bolts, and other mechanical components. Every input is labelled and every output is traceable — the sheet is designed to be checkable, not a black box.
Codes and standards followed
ASME VIII Div 3 KD-3: Fatigue Evaluation (S-N Route) — Excel follows ASME VIII. Each formula in the spreadsheet is cross-referenced to the specific code clause it implements — you can trace any calculation back to the underlying standard, which is essential for design review and regulatory sign-off.
If your project requires a different code base (e.g. converting an IS-code sheet to an ASME basis), we can produce a code-variant edition on request. Contact info@3d-labs.com for a variant quote.
What is included in your download
- The Excel calculation file (.xlsx) — fully unlocked formulas, cell-level comments, and a clear input/output layout.
- A sample worked example — realistic inputs plus expected outputs so you can validate the spreadsheet against a known case.
- User notes (PDF) — assumptions, code clauses referenced, and edge-case guidance.
- Revision history — every update to the spreadsheet is logged so you know what changed and when.
