Description
ASME VIII Div 3 + B31.3 Chapter IX High Pressure Design Suite — the complete evaluation route
High pressure design above the Division 1 ceiling is not one calculation, it is a sequence: establish the equivalent stress and prove the component against plastic collapse, then prove the design life by the S-N route, then prove it again by fracture mechanics where the Code requires it. If the component is piping, Chapter IX governs the pressure design and then refers fatigue straight back to Division 3 — across a stress basis that does not match. This suite carries all five steps, with the conversion between the two codes worked out explicitly rather than assumed.
Division 3 is the thinnest-served corner of the ASME catalogue: ASME publishes PTB-3 as an example manual for Division 2, but there is no equivalent for Division 3. These five workbooks were built by 3D-LABS to fill that gap, each one following the Code clause sequence with every intermediate quantity reported on its own row.
What is in the suite
- KD-2 — Equivalent Stress & Plastic Collapse (₹14,999 individually). Lamé stress field at the bore, von Mises per KD-231 against Tresca for comparison, limit pressure, estimated burst pressure and the collapse margin under KD-230.
- KD-3 — Fatigue Evaluation, S-N Route (₹15,999 individually). Stress difference tensor per KD-312, equivalent stress range, alternating amplitude with Kf, Ke and modulus corrections, allowable cycles interpolated from the KD-320 curve, usage factor. Shows the common tensor-difference error alongside the correct route.
- KD-4 — Fracture Mechanics Crack Growth (₹18,999 individually). Assumed initial flaw per KD-401, Newman & Raju shape factor, ΔK, critical depth from toughness and from leak-before-burst, closed-form Paris integration and design cycles per KD-430.
- B31.3 Chapter IX — High Pressure Piping (₹13,999 individually). K304 pressure design, Table K-1 allowable basis, thickness check with allowances, bore stresses on both criteria and the K302.3.5 displacement stress check.
- Chapter IX to Division 3 Fatigue Bridge (₹12,999 individually). The four differences between SE and a KD-312 amplitude, worked one at a time, ending in allowable cycles computed by both the correct route and the SE shortcut with the non-conservatism quantified.
Why the five work together
KD-2 establishes the stress state that KD-3 then cycles and KD-4 then grows a flaw under — the same Lamé field, the same von Mises criterion, consistent symbols across all three sheets. Chapter IX produces the piping numbers, and the Bridge converts them into the amplitude KD-312 expects. Bought separately the five cost ₹76,995; as a suite they are ₹54,999.

- ASME B31.3 — Chapter IX, K304, Table K-1, K302.3.5, 302.3.5 (2022)
- ASME BPVC VIII Division 2 Part 5 — comparable elastic fatigue and Ke methodology, cross-reference only (2023)
- Newman & Raju (1981) — stress intensity factors for semi-elliptical surface cracks, NASA TM
- Lamé (1833) — thick-walled cylinder elastic stress distribution
Each formula cites the clause it comes from on the same row as the result it produces, so a reviewer can check any of the five sheets line by line against the standard.
Who uses this suite
Pressure vessel and high pressure equipment designers working above the 70 MPa Division 1 ceiling — autoclaves, isostatic presses, waterjet intensifiers, hydrogen storage, compressed gas and injection systems; piping engineers on Chapter IX lines; fracture mechanics and integrity specialists; and design verification engineers and reviewers who need the whole route in one consistent set of symbols.
Important note on scope
This is a 3D-LABS worked example built in the ASME clause sequence. It is not a reproduction of an official ASME example — ASME publishes PTB-3 for Division 2 only, and there is no Division 3 example manual. Formulas, factors and acceptance limits must be verified against the governing edition of the Code before design use. S-N and crack-growth data are entered by the user from the Code figures and tables.

What ASME VIII Div 3 + B31.3 Chapter IX High Pressure Design Suite — 5 Excel Workbooks calculates
ASME VIII Div 3 + B31.3 Chapter IX High Pressure Design Suite — 5 Excel Workbooks is an Excel-native engineering calculation tool built by 3D-LABS for mechanical, design, and equipment engineers working with pressure equipment, rotating machinery, and mechanical systems. It is used for sizing pressure vessels, heat exchangers, flanges, bolts, and other mechanical components. Every input is labelled and every output is traceable — the sheet is designed to be checkable, not a black box.
Codes and standards followed
ASME VIII Div 3 + B31.3 Chapter IX High Pressure Design Suite — 5 Excel Workbooks follows ASME VIII. Each formula in the spreadsheet is cross-referenced to the specific code clause it implements — you can trace any calculation back to the underlying standard, which is essential for design review and regulatory sign-off.
If your project requires a different code base (e.g. converting an IS-code sheet to an ASME basis), we can produce a code-variant edition on request. Contact info@3d-labs.com for a variant quote.
What is included in your download
